  • Utilities are easy. Water, gas, and trash are all through the city at the same office (505 N Ellington Pkwy). Electric is DREMC — separate provider.

  • Columbia is 20 minutes west. For anything Lewisburg doesn't have — Lowe's, more restaurants, hospital options — Columbia is your closest mid-size city.
  • Share the road with horses. This is Walking Horse country. You may see horse trailers, farm equipment, and the occasional rider. Slow down and be patient.

Homeowner Tips

  • Check your roof after storms. Marshall County gets hail and high winds. File insurance claims promptly — most policies have a 1-year window.
  • Know your property taxes. Marshall County has some of the lowest property tax rates in Middle Tennessee. Pay at the Marshall County Trustee office.
  • Permits are required for most structural work, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC. Contact City of Lewisburg at (931) 359-1544.
  • Termites are common. Get an annual inspection. Budget $250-$400/year for a treatment bond.
  • Well water is common outside city limits. If you're on a well, get it tested annually. City water is through Lewisburg Water & Wastewater.
  • Septic vs sewer. Homes in city limits are usually on city sewer. Outside city limits, expect a septic system — pump every 3-5 years.

What Makes Lewisburg, Lewisburg

  • Tennessee Walking Horse country. Lewisburg is the headquarters of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders' and Exhibitors' Association (TWHBEA), founded here in 1935. More than half a million horses have been registered. This is ground zero for one of America's most iconic horse breeds.
  • The Fainting Goat Capital. Marshall County is the birthplace of the Tennessee Fainting Goat. First recorded here in the 1880s. The "fainting" is a harmless neuromuscular condition called myotonia. It's charming, it's weird, and it's 100% Lewisburg.
  • Goats, Music & More Festival. Annual October festival at Rock Creek Park. Goat shows, live music, arts and crafts, food vendors, and kids' activities. A beloved tradition since 2002.
  • The Duck River. Supplies Lewisburg's drinking water and is one of the most biodiverse rivers in North America. Great for kayaking, fishing, and getting on the water.
  • Small town, real community. About 12,200 people. Front porches, backyard gardens, and knowing your neighbors are the norm. The town square has a classic courthouse-centered downtown.
  • Cost of living. Marshall County has some of the lowest property taxes and living costs in Middle Tennessee. Your dollar goes further here.
  • The drive. Lewisburg is about an hour from Nashville, 20 minutes from Columbia, and 25 minutes from Shelbyville. It's not next door to anything — and that's part of the appeal.
